TRAINING FOR EUROPE

4 July 2005

Having just returned to South Africa from Spain after her record breaking crossing of the Straits of Gibraltar, Carina is stepping up her training for two upcoming marathon swims in Greece and England respectively.

She has been invited to take part in the International Swimming Crossing of the Toreneos Gulf near Thessaloniki in Greece on 23 July, after which she hopes to be traveling to Dover for an attempt to cross the English Channel. Carina is still in desperate need for sponsorship for this attempt.

The Greek swim is done in the traditional Olympic spirit and finishers are treated like royalty! Swimmers are met by 16000 spectators at the finish, and the marathon swim is surrounded by a week of festivities. More information is available on http://www.halkidiki.com/nikiti/toroneos.htm and http://www.sithon.org

The English Channel crossing is of course a benchmark for any long distance swimmer. Carina has the choice of two slots in August, but still need sponsorship of about R25000. She is training hard regardless, and is going ahead with her arrangements for England and Dover

3 July - 13 degrees training swim at Sea Point Pavilion with Dion Woodborne - also on his way to Dover for a Channel crossing in August - and Hugh Tucker, who successfully crossed the English Channel in 2004
