VISTA NOVA BIG SWIM 2005

16 April 2005

The annual Vista Nova Big Swim from Robben Island to Bloubergstrand took place on Saturday 16 April. 39 swimmers out of 69 entries, completed the individual crossing. Water temperatures were low (starting at 13.5 degrees but dropping to below 12 at places), and swimmers had to fight chop for the first 2km of the swim, as well as a strong current near the end, which slowed down the times considerably. For this reason, many swimmers were in the water more than 60 minutes longer than expected, and most competitors (finishers as well as non-finishers) were treated for various stages of hypothermia.

The race was won for the fifth consecutive time by veteran long distance swimming ace, Steven Klugman, in a time of 2h04. He was followed by the young up and coming distance swimmer from Johannesburg, Tyron Venter (2h12) and third was Barend Nortje (2h14). The ladies race was won by Natalie du Toit - also a patron of the race which is held in aid for the Vista Nova school in Cape Town - in 2h35. Carina Bruwer was the second female out of the water in 2h43, followed by Kirsti Jooste in 2h58.
